Focus the Message in Your Email

As consumers, we are often told that we should like a lot of variety and choice. Paradoxically, sometimes when we are overwhelmed with too many choices we decide not to make a purchase at all.

Perhaps you are sending out an email that is not selling anything but is requesting a different kind of action - liking a Facebook page or sending in comments to name a couple of examples. Recently at my day job we sent two versions of an email on behalf of a customer.

The first version of the email requested the recipient of the email to take two actions. The response was 0% on one action, and 5.7% on the other. The action that received no response had one link to click and the other action had two links to click.

The second email requested only one action with three links to it and the response rate went up to 8.6%. We got better results with no net gain in number of links but by providing less choice. That's something to think about if you are designing an email message to accomplish a speicific purpose - focus on what you really want people to do, and give them multiple opportunities to do it!

Featured Project from Carolyn's Stamp Store:
Vintage Look Box

Vintage Look Box I used a repurposed tea box with a sliding lid for my example of this decorated box. If you can't find a box exactly like this, any box with a flat lid would work. You might be able to use some of the downloads above in this project!
